- It made me realize how good this forgotten writer was.An enjoyable and a true account of an interesting time in Spain at the turn of the 20th century. It captures the "Galician" spirit and helps to clean the spiderwebs of our Spanish lexicon. Of course it is in Spanish!!
- I like it
- I NEEDED TO LEARN OLD GOOD SPANISH.
THE WORDING IS EXCELLENT
I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO IMPROVE THEIR SPANISH. - Thanks
- Vi la serie en TVE hace mucho tiempo. Tanto Emilia Pardo Bazán como Blasco Ibáñez hacen excelentes estampas de la España del SXIX
- I admit I have no idea why I bought this novel, as these overly-long overwrought 19th-century human and social explorations (with some self-regarding intrusions by the author) are just not for me. Having said that I did find this account of life in rural Galicia, with a longish interlude set in Santiago de Compostela, complete with social, marital, and political machinations to be very stimulating, and it amply maintained my interest.
One of the main problems I had with it was Julian, the priest at the centre of the novel. It is very much his story but he is so pious and effete his company becomes quickly almost unbearable. The same might be said of the unfortunate Nucha who is really unforgivably Julian's victim; he is the architect of her tragedy. While the novel could be read with interest as a physchogical study of an unrecognised unexpressed love shared by these two unable to step or see beyond the roles assigned to them by society and religion. Whatever the merit of their story I found myself wanting to spend more time with the less reputable members of the household, below stairs so to speak, or out on the hunting grounds of the farm.
There is a sequel to this novel but I won't, however curious, be reading it... I am not sorry I read this first installment however as I appreciated its local and historical colour, and as has been pointed out in another review, its rich and extensive larding of the Spanish text with Galician dialect... The dictionary mode and accompanying footnotes were supremely useful. - El arte en la descripción de los parajes y entornos, la precisión en el uso del lenguaje, la cadencia de una historia de personas corrientes
